The topic focus of this series of activities is toys, with some emphasis on
materials and their properties. Activities can be taught as a sequence of
lessons to form a complete unit of artwork. Alternatively, teachers can pick and choose lessons to complement ‘Materials’ work already being covered in Science lessons. Activities have been designed to allow children an opportunity to explore and compare materials and toys in different contexts. Children will discuss the materials that have been used to make toys – why were these materials chosen? What specific properties do these materials have?

The activities will also give children the chance to develop key design, construction and evaluation skills. They will also look at the work of Nathan Sawaya and, inspired by his work, have the opportunity to create their own animation.

The activities will encourage the use of art and design vocabulary as well as reinforcing specific science vocabulary. Children will have repeated opportunities to use this vocabulary in context during class discussions, written tasks and when evaluating their own work and the work of others.
