The topic focus of this project is ‘The Titanic’, and the activities presented here can be taught as a sequence of lessons to form a complete unit of work. Alternatively, teachers can pick and choose lessons to complement ‘Ships’ or ‘The Sea’ topic work already being covered in class.

In this unit children explore the tragic story of the Titanic. Creative outcomes using apps and artwork produced by the children will provide opportunities for them to explore “the ship of dreams” (before, during and after its doomed maiden voyage) and imagine what it would have been like to travel on board the great vessel. They will produce an information brochure for passengers, a newspaper report and character profile of a real life passenger or crew member. They will then step into the shoes of one of these personalities and write their own passenger diaries. In art, they will play with perspective and create their own posters and postcards with drawings that attempt to convey the sheer size and majesty of the Titanic. Children will also examine how artists have depicted seascapes and ships in their artwork, with a particular focus on the work of the British painter J.M.W. Turner.
