This project provides a series of activities that explores the world of plants, inspired by the work of Andy Goldsworthy. Activities can be taught as a sequence of lessons to form a complete unit of artwork. Alternatively, teachers can pick and choose lessons to complement ‘Plants’ or ‘Seasons’ topic work already being covered in class.

This unit of work will allow children to experiment with a range of different
materials and processes in order to investigate shape, line, pattern, texture, colour and mark making. Creative outcomes using apps and artwork produced by the children will also provide opportunities for children to explore tangible cross-curricular links with science (for example, identifying the parts of a plant) and maths (such as symmetry and repeating patterns).

The activities will also encourage the use of art vocabulary as well as reinforcing specific topic vocabulary. Children will have the opportunity to use this vocabulary by recording their own audio-visual books and glossaries.

This unit of work can be taught at any point during the year. However, teachers should be aware that several activities rely on children working outside or collecting materials from nature to use in their artwork. Outcomes will vary depending on the season!
