The topic focus of this project is ‘Inventions’, and the activities presented here can be taught as a sequence of lessons to form a complete unit of work. Alternatively, teachers can pick and choose lessons to complement topic work already being covered in class.

Creative outcomes using apps and artwork produced by the children will provide opportunities for them to explore personal responses to art and inventions, make comparisons and evaluations and present their own independent research. They will conduct and present their own research into some of the most important inventions throughout history, and learn how to arrange key events on a timeline.

They will also learn about Leonardo da Vinci the inventor! Inspired by the ‘Renaissance man’ children will go on to design, make and evaluate their own inventions, which will be showcased in a ‘Young Inventors’ science exhibition! However, although da Vinci may have been all for innovation and inventions, not all artists share this feeling. Children will have the opportunity to compare how artists convey their own points of view in their artwork, before attempting to do the same.
