The topic focus of this series of activities is animals, taking inspiration from the patterns and colours of animals in the wild to inspire work in the classroom. Children will also examine the work of French artist Henri Rousseau. Activities can be taught as a sequence of lessons to form a complete unit of artwork, or teachers can pick and choose lessons to complement ‘Animals’ or ‘Living Things’ topic work already being covered in class.

This unit of work gives children a lot of creative freedom as they explore colours and patterns. They will experiment with a range of different materials and processes in order to investigate composition, colour mixing, layering, shape, space and the idea of foreground and background. Creative outcomes using apps and artwork produced by the children will provide an opportunity to draw on knowledge and ideas from other areas of the curriculum, in particular Science.

The work produced in this unit can also be used to support learning in Spoken Language and Writing, as a way to introduce children to non-fiction texts.

The activities will develop the use of art vocabulary as well as reinforcing specific topic vocabulary. Children will have the opportunity to use this vocabulary in class discussions, by recording their own nature video and writing their own non-fiction texts.
